Understanding Subcision for Ice Pick and Boxcar Scars
What is Subcision?
Subcision is a minor surgical procedure performed in-clinic, designed to treat depressed acne scars, including many ice pick and boxcar types. It involves using a specialized needle to break the fibrous bands that tether the scar down to the underlying tissue.
How Does It Work?
Imagine your scar is like a dimple being pulled down by tiny invisible strings. Subcision precisely cuts these "strings."
Breaking the Tethers: A very fine needle is inserted under the skin, parallel to the surface.
Releasing the Scar: The needle is then moved back and forth in a fanning motion, mechanically breaking the fibrous bands that pull the scar downward.
Encouraging New Collagen: This process not only releases the scar but also creates a controlled wound beneath the skin. As this wound heals, it stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin, which helps to lift and smooth the depressed scar.
Blood & Healing: A small amount of blood usually pools under the scar, creating a "hematoma." This hematoma acts as a natural filler, temporarily lifting the scar and creating a space for new collagen to form, preventing the scar from re-tethering.
