What causes androgenic acne?
The primary mechanism involves the sebaceous (oil) glands in your skin. These glands are highly sensitive to androgens. When androgen levels are elevated (or even normal levels but the glands are hypersensitive), they stimulate increased sebum production. This excess oil, combined with dead skin cells, can clog hair follicles, leading to:
Increased sebum production (seborrhea): More oil on the skin.
Follicular hyperkeratinization: Skin cells lining the hair follicle shed excessively and stick together, further blocking the pore.
Bacterial overgrowth: Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes), a bacteria naturally present on the skin, thrives in the oxygen-deprived, oil-rich environment of clogged pores, leading to inflammation.
Inflammation: The body's immune response to the bacteria and clogged pores results in redness, swelling, and painful lesions.
